This will knock out both the warmth AND any residual smoke and haze, and will also serve to yank down the highs into only the 60s by the end of the weekend. Stronger onshore flow kicks in Saturday and Sunday, dragging that cool ocean air into Puget Sound. That marine layer-the "May gray"-finally gets the green light to move inland this weekend. If you're hiking in the Cascades, watch for a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the mountain crest. At the beaches, a hefty and drizzly marine layer will keep readings only in the upper 50s to low 60s in Ocean Park and Westport. Afternoon highs will hit the upper 70s near the urban core, but we'll still find some 80s along I-5 closer to the Oregon state line. Other than the smoke and haze, Thursday and Friday still look to feature dry sunshine and unusual warmth. Eastern Washington has it a bit worse, and as such, an 'Air Quality Alert' is in place for much of the northeastern corner of the state. So far the smoke is still high up enough that it hasn't impacted air quality too terribly locally, but some of the sensors may lean into the "moderate" territory as the smoke lingers tomorrow. The smoke moderated the heat a bit, tamping down temperatures into the upper 70s near the metro area rather than the middle 80s that would have been reached otherwise. Dozens of wildfires are burning in western Canada, especially in Alberta, and that upper atmospheric smoke is wafted in courtesy of the clockwise winds circulating around the big ridge of high pressure to our north. Kristin earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology from Pennsylvania State University. This unique perspective gives Kristin a continued love and appreciation for the atmospheric sciences.
